Tanglewood MasterDesign series: the TSR2C grand auditorium

The Tanglewood MasterDesign series has a single guitar, the Tanglewood TSR2C Electro-Acoustic Guitar. It costs £1,999 and has a solid sitka spruce top, a grand auditorium body and built-in electronics. It is the kind of instrument you buy when you know what you want from an acoustic.

What a grand auditorium offers

The grand auditorium is a mid-sized body that sits between the compact orchestra guitar and the larger dreadnought. It is known for a balanced voice, with clear trebles, firm mids and a controlled bass. That makes it a flexible choice for fingerstyle, light strumming and recording.

With a solid top, the guitar responds to how you play. Pick lightly and it stays sweet. Dig in harder and it keeps its shape rather than turning muddy. The built-in electronics mean the same guitar can go straight onto a stage.

Folk guitar style, broader reach

Many players come to a grand auditorium from a folk guitar or an orchestra guitar and find it gives them a little more depth without becoming unwieldy. If you play folk acoustic guitar styles such as fingerpicked arrangements, it is worth trying one. The shape is also kind to the picking arm, and it sits well against the body when you play for a long time.

Who it suits

  • Players who want one long-term guitar rather than a cheaper stopgap.
  • Singer songwriters who record at home and perform live.
  • Anyone who finds a dreadnought too large and an orchestra guitar slightly small.

Comparing it with nearby ranges

Two other ranges reach this level. The Tanglewood Great Britain series also costs £1,999, but in super folk and slope shoulder dreadnought shapes. The Tanglewood Heritage guitars begin at £1,199 and focus on the dreadnought. If you are not sure that a grand auditorium is right for you, the Tanglewood Java range at £649 lets you try several body shapes for far less.
