Tanglewood Enredo Madera Comienzo Classical Guitars

Comienzo classical guitars for beginners

A classical guitar has nylon strings, a wide neck and a soft, warm tone, and the Enredo Madera Comienzo series is where the Tanglewood classical range begins. Prices run from £89 to £119, and every model has a spruce top. It suits children, returning players and anyone who wants a first guitar without a large outlay.

Sizes in the series

Choosing the right size matters more than anything else with a first instrument. The EMC1 is a 1/2 size classical guitar at £99. The EMC34 is a 3/4 classical guitar at £89, which suits older children and smaller adults. The EMC44 is a full size guitar at £89, and the EMC3 is a 4/4 model at £119.

• 1/2 size: for the youngest players.
• 3/4 size: a shorter scale that is easier on small hands.
• Full size: the standard adult classical guitar.

How Comienzo compares

The step up is the Enredo Madera Elegante range, which starts at £139 and adds a thinline electro model. For solid cedar and solid spruce tops, and built in electronics, look at Enredo Madera Dominar. If you are not yet sure whether classical is right for you, our acoustic guitars page shows the steel string alternatives. Comparing the two helps when you are choosing an acoustic and classical guitar for the first time.

What you will need

Nylon strings are gentler on the fingertips than steel, which is one reason classical guitars are popular for learning. Add a gig bag for carrying and a tuner to keep things in pitch. You can see every instrument of this type in our classical guitars range.

Who Comienzo suits

With four models and a top price of £119, the series keeps the cost of starting low. Parents buying for a growing child can pick the size that fits now, and adults who want a simple nylon string guitar for relaxed playing at home will find the full size models easy to live with. Every guitar here has a spruce top, so the choice is mainly about size. If you are unsure, hold a guitar against your body and check that your left arm reaches the first fret comfortably without stretching. A good fit makes practice more enjoyable and helps you stick with it.
