Tanglewood Crossroads: affordable dreadnought and more
Tanglewood Crossroads is the range to look at first if you want a good-looking acoustic for a small outlay. There are 11 models, priced from £129 to £209, and every one has a mahogany top. The series covers the shape most people picture when they think of a dreadnought acoustic guitar, plus several smaller bodies.
Dreadnought and electro versions
The TWCRD Crossroads Dreadnought costs £129. It has the larger body and fuller voice of a dreadnought guitar and is a good first guitar for strumming songs. If you want to plug in, the TWCRDE Dreadnought Electro costs £199. See the whole dreadnought acoustic guitars range for more choice at other budgets.
Smaller bodies
Not everyone wants a big guitar. The TWCRO Orchestra, the TWCRP Parlour and the TWCRT Travel Guitar are all £129. They suit younger or smaller players and anyone who wants a guitar that is easy to carry. The orchestra also comes as the TWCROE Electro at £199.
For a cutaway with pickup, the TWCRSFCE Super Folk is £199, and a left-handed version, the TWCRSFCELH, costs £209.
Choosing a Crossroads
- Learning: the £129 acoustics need no extra kit.
- Playing out: the £199 electro models include a pickup.
- Left-handed: the TWCRSFCELH removes the need to restring a right-handed guitar.
The Crossroads TC series is the sister range with similar prices. When you outgrow these guitars, see the guitars under £500, or the left-handed guitars page for more lefty models.
Getting started
A new player will need a few basics beyond the guitar. A tuner is the first item on the list, and a set of spare strings is a close second. A gig bag helps if you take the guitar to lessons or a friend's house. Choosing a smaller body such as the parlour or travel guitar can make learning more comfortable, particularly for children and for adults with shorter arms.
The range also makes a useful gift. Prices are low enough that a parent can buy a guitar for a child without worry, and the choice of shapes means you can match the size to the player. Because every Crossroads model uses the same mahogany top, you can choose on body size and if a pickup matters to you, without needing to compare timbers.
