A concert ukulele sits between the small soprano and the larger tenor. The body and scale are a little longer than a soprano, which gives the fingers more room on the fretboard and adds warmth and volume to the sound. For many players it is the best all-round size. Choosing by wood

The top wood is the clearest difference between these eight ukuleles, and each gives a different voice.

Electro-acoustic concert ukulele models

If you play live or want to record, an electro acoustic concert ukulele lets you plug straight into an amplifier. The TWT 8 E has a koa top and the TWT 12 E has an ovangkol top, each at £199. Both keep the same comfortable size as the unplugged models.

How to pick

For a first ukulele, start at £89, where you still get a properly set up instrument. At £129 you move into koa and flame mahogany. The £179 to £199 models add more distinctive woods and the option of electronics.

Why players pick a concert size

The concert scale is a good compromise. Chords are easy to reach, so beginners and children find it friendly, yet the extra length gives a rounder, louder tone than a soprano. Adults with larger hands often find it more comfortable too. It is also small enough to carry in a bag or take on holiday, and it keeps its tuning well when you are playing for long sessions at home.
