Tanglewood Roadster guitars for every budget

Tanglewood Roadster is a friendly, affordable range. There are 13 guitars here, priced between £229 and £329, and every one has a spruce top. If you are looking for a Tanglewood Roadster guitar as a first instrument, a second guitar or a grab-and-go option, this series gives you plenty of shapes to compare.

Acoustic or electro-acoustic?

The plain acoustics are the cheapest. The TR3 (orchestra) and TR5 (dreadnought) are both £229, and the TR2 travel folk is £229 too. Adding a pickup moves the price up: the TR2E is £269, while the TR3E, TR5CE, TR4CE and TR8E are £299.

Choose your body shape

  • Travel Folk (TR2, TR2E): small enough to take anywhere.
  • Super Folk (TR4CE): a cutaway electro-acoustic with a comfortable mid-sized body.
  • Parlour (TR8E): a compact body with an intimate voice, good for fingerstyle.
  • Orchestra (TR3, TR3E): balanced and easy to play for strumming and picking.
  • Dreadnought (TR5, TR5CE): the classic big-bodied strummer.
  • 12 String Super Folk (TR412CE): the top-priced model at £329.

How to decide

Think about where you will play. For living-room practice an acoustic at £229 is plenty. For open mics or recording, choose an electro model. Browse electro-acoustic guitars if you want more options, or guitars under £300 to see every pick in this price band.

A few price points are worth remembering. Anything marked E or CE has a pickup, and the step from a plain acoustic to its electro twin is £40 for the travel folk and £70 for the orchestra. That makes the TR3 and TR3E a handy pair: same body, same spruce top, with the only difference being the option to plug in. The same is true of the TR5 and TR5CE dreadnoughts. If you may want to gig later, the electro version saves you a future upgrade, but if you only plan to play at home, the plain acoustic keeps costs down.

Left-handed players should check the left-handed guitars page for other options in the shop.

The closely related Tanglewood Roadster X series offers electro-acoustics only, all with a spruce top. For a step up with solid tops, try Reunion Pro.
