Sundance Historic: a dreadnought acoustic guitar with a solid spruce top
The Tanglewood Sundance Historic series is built around the classic dreadnought guitar, then widens out into a few other shapes. All seven models have a solid spruce top and built-in electronics, and prices run from £799 to £899. If you want a dreadnought acoustic you can plug in, this is a sensible place to start.
Choosing a shape
The TW40 D AN E is the straightforward dreadnought. The TW40 SD VS E is a slope shoulder dreadnought, a rounded take on the same big body. If you prefer something less bulky, the TW40 O AN E is an orchestra model and the TW40 SO HC E is an OO folk in Heritage Cherry.
Dreadnoughts give plenty of volume and a strong low end, which suits strumming and flatpicking. Smaller bodies are more balanced and kinder to fingerstyle playing.
The 12-string option
The TW40 12 SD AN E is the one 12-string in the range, at £899. It uses the slope shoulder dreadnought body. If you are curious about the shimmer of doubled strings, our 12-string acoustic guitars page has more to compare.
What you get at this price
- Solid spruce top on every model
- Electro-acoustic, ready for an amp or PA
- Dreadnought, slope shoulder, orchestra and OO folk bodies
- £799 for most models, £899 for the 12-string
Why a solid spruce top?
Spruce is the most common top wood on acoustic guitars for good reason. It is stiff and light, which gives a clear, bright sound with good projection and plenty of headroom when you dig in. A solid top, rather than laminate, vibrates more freely, so the guitar is louder and has more detail in its tone. Over time the wood settles and the sound tends to become richer.
Having electronics on every model means you can play quietly at home and plug in for a gig without changing guitar. That is handy if you are moving from bedroom practice to live playing, because one instrument covers both jobs.
