Tanglewood Elemental series: solid mahogany tops from £299
The Tanglewood Elemental range is a small family of four guitars, priced between £299 and £349. Every model has a solid mahogany top, which is not something you often see at this money. A solid top is cut from a single piece of timber rather than laminated layers, so it tends to open up and sound fuller as the guitar is played.
Four shapes to choose from
The series covers a lot of ground for its size. The Tanglewood TE3BL is an orchestra guitar at £299, a balanced body that suits fingerpicking and strumming. The Tanglewood TE5BL is a dreadnought, also £299, for anyone who wants a bigger voice and a strong low end.
If you like the idea of a folk guitar, the Tanglewood TE4CEBL is a super folk cutaway with electronics at £349. It is a comfortable shape for singer songwriters and easy to reach the upper frets on. Finally the Tanglewood TE8EBL is a parlour at £349, also with electronics, for a smaller body that sits easily on the lap.
How to choose between them
- Body size: parlour is the most compact, orchestra and super folk sit in the middle, and the dreadnought is the largest and loudest.
- Acoustic or electro-acoustic: the TE3BL and TE5BL are purely acoustic at £299. The TE4CEBL and TE8EBL cost £50 more and add a pickup so you can play through an amp or PA.
- Style of playing: folk acoustic guitar players often prefer the super folk or orchestra bodies, while strummers tend to head for the dreadnought.
Who the Elemental range suits
These guitars suit players moving up from a first instrument who want a solid wood top without a big jump in price. They also work well as a second guitar for the sofa or the car boot. If you would rather spend a little less, the Tanglewood Metropolitan series starts at £179. To step up to a spruce top with electronics, take a look at the Tanglewood Java range.
