Tanglewood TE5BL Elemental Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar with Solid Mahogany Top

Big dreadnought volume from solid mahogany

The Tanglewood TE5BL is a dreadnought acoustic guitar from the Elemental series. Dreadnoughts are the big, loud shape most people picture when they think of an acoustic, and this one has a solid mahogany top. It is a strong choice for strummers and singers who want volume without paying for a high-end build.

Projection and tone

The large body moves plenty of air, so chords sound full and open. Mahogany makes the voice warm and slightly dry, with a solid midrange rather than a sharp edge. Because the top is solid mahogany, the guitar responds well when you dig in with a pick and still handles lighter fingerpicking cleanly. The back and sides are mahogany as well, which keeps the sound consistent from the bass to the treble.

Looks and finish

A blue and white pearl rosette sets this guitar apart from the usual plain soundhole ring. The natural satin finish lets the mahogany grain show through, and it has a smooth, low-shine feel. The fingerboard is Eboncore.

What to know before you buy

• Dreadnought body, the largest shape in the Elemental line
• Solid mahogany top with mahogany back and sides
• Eboncore fingerboard
• No pickup fitted, so it is for acoustic playing

A dreadnought is bigger to hold than an orchestra or parlour guitar. Smaller players may prefer a more compact body, so it is worth thinking about how you sit and play. If you like the idea of a solid mahogany top acoustic guitar with a bold sound and a distinctive rosette, the TE5BL is a straightforward pick at £299. Plenty of players will find it works as a main guitar for songwriting, campfire sessions or accompanying a band.
