Tanglewood Premier series: solid-top electro-acoustics
The Tanglewood Premier series is a compact line-up of three electro-acoustic guitars. Prices run from £599 to £629, which puts it firmly in the step-up bracket for players who have outgrown a first guitar. The common thread is a solid engelmann spruce top, plugged-in electronics and a choice of two body shapes.
What you get in the Premier range
Solid engelmann spruce is the headline feature here. A solid top vibrates more freely than laminate, so the tone opens up and matures with playing. You can see more guitars built this way in our solid top acoustic guitars section.
Each Premier model is an electro-acoustic, so you can play it at home or plug into an amp or PA on stage. If you are new to plugging in, browse our electro-acoustic guitars and acoustic guitar amplifiers.
Two shapes to choose from
- Tanglewood TP4CE (£599) is a Super Folk shape. It is a comfortable, mid-sized body that suits fingerpicking, strumming and general folk guitar work.
- Tanglewood TP5SE (£599) is a Slope Shoulder Dreadnought. The larger body gives a fuller, rounder voice, which many players like for rhythm and accompaniment.
How to choose
Start with body size. If you want a folk acoustic guitar that is easy to hold and balanced across the strings, the Super Folk is the natural pick. If you strum chords for singing and want more weight in the sound, go for the dreadnought shape.
Then think about budget. At £599 the Premier sits above the Tanglewood Roadster range, where spruce-topped guitars start at £229. For something in between, look at Tanglewood Reunion Pro, where models sit around £399, or browse guitars under £500.
Compare these guitars with the wider acoustic guitars range if you are still deciding on shape, or look at the folk and orchestra acoustic guitars page for more mid-sized bodies. Every order from Armstrong Guitars comes with free UK delivery, so the price you see is the price you pay.
If you want a solid-top guitar with electronics built in and a price that stays under £630, the Tanglewood Premier series is a sensible place to start.
