Tanglewood Metropolitan Guitars

Seven affordable guitars from £179, in orchestra, dreadnought, super folk and auditorium shapes, with acoustic and electro options.

Tanglewood Metropolitan series: guitars from £179

The Tanglewood Metropolitan series is the entry point to the acoustic range, with prices from £179 to £229. There are seven models in total, so you can choose the body shape you prefer and decide if you want electronics. Every guitar has an HPL spruce top, a hard-wearing laminate that copes well with daily use.

A first guitar that does the job

This range is aimed at people who want a proper full-size guitar without a big outlay. Orchestra and super folk bodies appeal to anyone who wants a folk guitar feel, while the dreadnought is the traditional pick for strumming. The finish is simple and practical, and the sound is bright and easy to enjoy straight from the box.

Acoustic models at £179

The Tanglewood TM3 is an orchestra guitar, comfortable for smaller players and good for fingerpicking. The Tanglewood TM5 is a dreadnought with a bigger sound for strumming. Both are acoustic only, which keeps the price low.

Electro-acoustic models at £229

For £50 more you get a pickup. The Tanglewood TM3E is the electro version of the orchestra guitar. The Tanglewood TM4CE is a super folk cutaway, and the Tanglewood TM5CE is a dreadnought. The Tanglewood TM6CE has an auditorium Venetian cutaway body, a different shape from the rest.

How to choose

  • Starting out: the acoustic TM3 or TM5 gives you a proper full-size guitar for the least money.
  • Playing with others: an electro model lets you plug in without extra purchases.
  • Comfort: orchestra bodies feel smaller and lighter than dreadnoughts.

Looking after it

A laminate top is forgiving about changes in room temperature and humidity, so these guitars need less fuss than a solid wood instrument. A set of fresh strings, a tuner and a gig bag are all most players need to get going, and you will find those in our accessories section.

Laminate versus solid top

An HPL top is built from layers, so it is stable and tough, and it suits beginners who may knock their guitar about. A solid top, which you will find in the Tanglewood Elemental series from £299, usually gives a richer tone and improves with age. If you want to buy a first guitar now and upgrade later, the Metropolitan range is a sensible start.
