Guitar Strings
Tanglewood guitar strings from £9 to £12. A fresh set is the quickest way to brighten tone and make playing easier.
Guitar Strings from Tanglewood
Old strings sound dull and go out of tune easily, so changing them is the cheapest upgrade any guitarist can make. This page lists Tanglewood guitar strings priced from £9 to £12. The Tanglewood TWGS C set at £9 comes from the Strings range, and you can read more about it on the Tanglewood Strings page.
Choosing the right strings
The first thing to check is the type of instrument. Acoustic guitar strings are made for steel-string guitars and give a bright, ringing sound. Nylon string guitar sets are softer and suit classical models, and you can browse our classical guitars to see which instruments use them. Electric guitar strings are lighter and are made to work with pickups. If you play a 12 string guitar, you need a dedicated twelve string guitar strings set, as an ordinary six-string pack will not do.
When to change them
- The strings look dark or feel rough under your fingers.
- The guitar will not stay in tune.
- Chords sound flat or dull compared with a new set.
- You play most days. Regular players tend to change strings more often.
Other string instruments
Banjo string and mandolin sets are different from guitar sets, so check the model page of the instrument you own. Our banjos and mandolins page shows the instruments we stock, and ukulele players can see our ukuleles.
Keep everything in good shape
Strings work best alongside a few simple extras. A tuner or capo, available under tuners and capos, helps with setting up after a change. A little fingerboard oil from our guitar care range keeps the wood in condition, and you can see everything else on the guitar accessories page.
Every order ships with free UK delivery, so a spare set costs you very little.
Fitting new strings
Change one string at a time so the neck keeps even tension. Stretch each new string gently, retune and repeat until the pitch settles. Wipe down the strings after playing to make them last longer. If you are unsure which gauge suits your guitar, check the model page for the instrument or contact us before ordering, and we will point you in the right direction.
