Dreadnought guitar range

The dreadnought guitar is the classic big bodied acoustic, and it is the shape most people picture when they think of a steel string guitar. We stock 40 Tanglewood dreadnought acoustic guitars, priced from £129 to £1,999. Some are plain acoustics and many are dreadnought electro acoustic guitars with a pickup fitted.

What a dreadnought sounds like

This dreadnought guitar type has a deep body and wide waist. That gives plenty of volume and a strong bass, which suits strumming and flatpicking. It is a popular choice for singers who need a guitar that fills the room. Slope shoulder dreadnought acoustic models, such as the Sundance Historic TW40 SD VS E at £799, add a vintage look and a warm, rounded tone.

Series to look at

  • Crossroads: the TWCRD at £129 and the TWCRDE electro at £199, both with mahogany tops.
  • Winterleaf: the TW5CEAVB and TW5CENA cutaways at £449, with solid mahogany or solid cedar tops.
  • Union: the TUN5 at £349 and TUN5CE at £399, with solid mahogany tops.
  • Sundance Reserve: the TW15R at £999, with a solid cedar top.
  • Heritage: the TW1000HSR at £1,349 and cutaway TW1000HSRCE at £1,499, both solid spruce.

Choosing between models

Start with the top wood. Laminate tops keep the price low, while solid tops cost more and give a richer sound. Then decide on a cutaway and electronics. A cutaway makes the upper frets easier to reach, and a pickup lets you plug into an amp. If you want a dreadnought junior feel, look at the smaller bodied guitars in our small and travel range or the parlour guitars.

Budget bands help too. Around £129 to £229 you will find the Strada TS5, Metropolitan TM5 and Blackbird TWBBSDE. Between £299 and £549 sit the Roadster, Elemental and Rosewood Smart guitars. If you want even more choice, the Reunion Pro TRU512AE at £399 is a 12 string dreadnought with a solid spruce top, and the Premier TP5SE at £599 uses a solid engelmann spruce top on a slope shoulder body. The Java TJ5CE at £649 is a solid spruce cutaway electro. These step up in price but they also step up in tone, so they are worth a look if you plan to keep the guitar for years. Everything here ships with free UK delivery, and you can see the wider choice on our main acoustic guitars page.
