Acoustic Bass Guitars for Practice and Stage
An acoustic bass guitar gives you the depth of a bass without needing an amplifier to hear yourself. Tanglewood has four in this range, priced from £299 to £499. Each one has electronics fitted, so you can also plug in for rehearsals or gigs.
What Makes an Acoustic Bass Different
The body is large, which helps the low notes carry. Strings are thick and the neck is long, so the feel is close to an electric bass. The sound is softer and rounder, which suits unplugged songwriting, small acoustic sets and quiet practice at home.
The Four Models
The two cheapest are the Blackbird TWBBAB and the Blackbird TB TB7ABCE. Both cost £299, use a Bass Jumbo body and have mahogany tops. They are a sensible way to try the instrument. You can read more about the Blackbird and Blackbird TB ranges.
The Reunion Pro TRU7ABCEAW is £429 and has a solid spruce top. At the top, the Winterleaf TW7ABCENA is a Super Jumbo Bass at £499, also with solid spruce. See the Reunion Pro and Winterleaf pages for neighbouring models.
Choosing Your Bass
- Pick mahogany for a warm tone at the lowest price.
- Choose solid spruce for extra clarity and projection.
- Think about size: the Super Jumbo is the biggest body here.
Who Buys an Acoustic Bass?
Guitarists who want a quiet instrument for the sofa often pick one up, as do bass players who need something for busking, songwriting circles or small unplugged sessions. It is also handy for teachers and for anyone building a home recording setup with a bass that needs no separate amplifier to hear what is going on.
Keeping It in Good Shape
A large body needs a sturdy case or bag, so check our guitar gig bags before you buy. Bass strings last well but still lose their brightness, and our guitar care items keep the finish clean. If you need to tune quickly in a noisy room, a clip-on from tuners and capos is a useful extra.
Bass players who also strum can look at our wider range of acoustic guitars. You will need a lead to connect to an amp, and our guitar cables page covers that. Free UK delivery applies to all four basses.
