Tanglewood Great Britain series: two flagship electro-acoustics
The Tanglewood Great Britain series is the most exclusive corner of the acoustic range. There are just two models, and both are priced at £1,999. Each has a solid sitka spruce top and built-in electronics, so they are ready for the stage as much as the living room.
The two models
The Tanglewood TGB4CE is a super folk guitar with a cutaway. Super folk is a roomy body with a slightly slimmer waist than a dreadnought, which gives a clear, even tone. It is a natural choice for a folk acoustic guitar player who wants a guitar that records and amplifies well.
The Tanglewood TGB5SE is a slope shoulder dreadnought. That rounded shoulder is a classic old-school shape, and it suits strumming, flatpicking and accompanying a voice. If you already love the sound of a dreadnought, this is the one to look at first.
Why solid sitka spruce
Sitka spruce is one of the most widely used soundboard woods in guitar making. A solid top, cut from a single piece, responds to light touch and still copes when you dig in hard. Both guitars here share that top, so the choice comes down to body shape rather than to wood.
Playing and living with them
At this price you expect a guitar to feel finished in the hand, and both models are made for long sessions. The cutaway on the TGB4CE helps when you move up the neck for solos. The TGB5SE has no cutaway, which keeps the classic look and the traditional full-bodied dreadnought resonance. The electronics on both let you carry the same sound from a quiet practice room to a live set, without having to fit a separate pickup.
Is it the right series for you?
- You want a serious, long-term acoustic that can be plugged in.
- You have a clear preference between a super folk and a dreadnought.
- Your budget is around £2,000 and you prefer one excellent guitar to several cheaper ones.
If that is slightly above your budget, the Tanglewood Heritage series starts at £1,199, and the Tanglewood Java range costs £649 with a spruce top and electronics. The only other guitar at this price is the Tanglewood MasterDesign.
