Tanglewood Northstar guitars

The Tanglewood Northstar series is a straightforward way to buy a solid body electric guitar without spending a lot. Prices start at £139 and rise to £249, so there is a model for beginners and for players who want a little more. There are 17 guitars across the range, including the Northstar Pro.

Double cutaway and single cutaway

Two main shapes run through the series. The double cutaway models, such as the NS1BK, NS1EG and NS1MC, are light and easy to reach around. They cost £139, while the NS1CFHH is £149.

The single cutaway models include the NS2CB and NS2SFG at £139. Step up to the NS3CB or NS3GT at £249 if you want the higher tier of the range.

Northstar Pro

The NS54 is part of the Northstar Pro group. It has an electric folk style body and costs £199, which puts it between the entry and top models.

Choosing your guitar

  • First guitar: pick a £139 model and keep the budget for an amp and cable. See our guitar cables and accessories.
  • Shape: try double cutaway for light weight, or single cutaway for a more classic look.
  • Budget: every model qualifies for our guitars under £300 page.

What you get for the money

The Northstar series keeps things simple. These are electric guitars for learning, practising and gigging, and the pricing makes them easy to say yes to. If you are buying for a child or a partner, a £139 model keeps the risk low. If you already play, the £249 models give you a step up without moving into a different price bracket.

Take your time with the finish options. The model codes show different colours and styles, so look at the photos on each page. A guitar you enjoy looking at is a guitar you pick up more often, and that is how people improve.

Finally, think about what you will play through. A small practice amp is plenty at home, and you can add effects pedals later as your tastes develop.

Solid body guitars are less prone to feedback at volume than hollow bodies, and they stay stable when you play loud. For other options, see all solid body electric guitars, the smaller Northstar Littlestar, or the Chicago semi-acoustic. Delivery is free in the UK.
