The Tanglewood Union series: solid mahogany folk guitars
The Tanglewood Union series is a value range of folk acoustic guitars. Every model has a solid mahogany top, and prices are either £349 for the acoustics or £399 for the electro-acoustics. That is a lot of real wood for the money, which is why Union is often the first series we suggest to new players moving up from a beginner guitar.
Acoustic models
The Tanglewood TUN3 is an orchestra guitar, a balanced body that suits fingerpicking and light strumming. The Tanglewood TUN5 is a dreadnought, with a bigger sound and more bass. Both cost £349 and have no electronics.
Electro-acoustic models
If you plan to play with a band or at open mic nights, the electro-acoustics are worth the extra £50. The TUN4CE is a super folk, the TUN5CE is a dreadnought and the TUN8E is a parlour. All three are £399.
Picking the right body
- Orchestra: balanced and clear, good for fingerstyle
- Dreadnought: loud, with a strong low end for strumming
- Super folk: a little more body than a standard folk shape
- Parlour: small, light and easy to carry
Why mahogany?
A mahogany top has a warm, slightly dry sound that sits well in a mix and is forgiving for beginners. Because it is solid wood, the tone should improve with playing.
Acoustic or electro-acoustic?
This is the big question in the range. The two acoustics are simple and cheap, and they are ideal for playing at home, for lessons and for learning chords. The electro-acoustics add a pickup and preamp, so you can plug into an amplifier or a PA. If you think you might play live in future, the extra £50 is usually money well spent, because adding electronics later costs more.
