Tanglewood Blackbird TB: one tone wood, many shapes
The Tanglewood Blackbird guitar family has two branches, and this is the TB branch. It has 11 models from £189 to £299, and every guitar shown has a mahogany top. What changes is the body, so you can pick the size and feel that suits you.
The shapes
The TB3 Acoustic Guitar is the cheapest at £189, an orchestra body with no pickup. Its electro sibling, the TB3E, costs £229. The TB2CE is the small travel-size option, also £229.
Larger bodies include the TB5CE dreadnought, the TB5SE slope shoulder dreadnought, the TB4CE Super Folk and the TB7E super jumbo, each £229. The jumbo gives the deepest bass response in the range.
12-string and bass
Two special models cost £299. The TB412CE is a 12-string Super Folk, and the TB7ABCE is an electro-acoustic bass with a jumbo body. If you need more than one of either, visit the 12-string guitars and acoustic bass guitars pages.
Choosing within the series
- Pick the travel or orchestra body if comfort and portability matter most.
- Pick a dreadnought or jumbo if you want volume and bass for rhythm playing.
- Pick a model ending in E or CE if you want to plug in, or the TB3 if you only need an acoustic.
The related Blackbird range has a slightly different line-up at the same prices. For a first guitar at £129, compare the Crossroads TC series, or step up to Winterleaf for solid tops.
Getting set up
Once you have chosen a body shape, think about what else you need. A gig bag protects the guitar when you carry it, and a tuner keeps it sounding right. The electro-acoustic models only need a guitar cable and an amplifier to be heard in a bigger room. The travel-size TB2CE is a good pick if you want a guitar that fits easily into a car boot or a train luggage rack.
With so many models at £229, the decision comes down to body size. Try to imagine where you will play most. A guitar for the sofa or the garden suits the travel or orchestra body, while a band rehearsal or a busy session suits the dreadnought or super jumbo. The nine electro-acoustic six-string and special models all share the same mahogany top, so tone differences come from the shape.
