Sundance Reserve: dreadnought and super folk guitars with solid tops
The Tanglewood Sundance Reserve series sits at the premium end of our acoustic range, with prices from £999 to £1,199. Every guitar has a solid top, in cedar or mahogany, and most have electronics. It is a good place to look if you have outgrown a starter guitar and want a more serious instrument.
The models
The Tanglewood TW15R is the dreadnought guitar of the series. It has a solid cedar top and, at £999, is the only model here without electronics, so it is a pure acoustic. That makes it the cheapest way in.
The other models are super folk guitars. The TW45RE has a solid cedar top in Natural, and the TW47RE has a solid mahogany top. Both are electro-acoustics at £1,199.
Cedar or mahogany?
A cedar top gives a warm, responsive voice that speaks easily under light playing. A mahogany top is more focused and woody, with a dry, punchy character that many players like for blues and folk. Hearing the two side by side is the best way to decide, but it helps to know that both are solid wood rather than laminate.
How to choose
- Want a classic dreadnought acoustic guitar with no pickup: TW15R
- Want a super folk with a cedar top and a pickup: TW45RE
- Want a super folk with a mahogany top and a pickup: TW47RE
Is it worth the step up?
Moving from a range around £350 or £450 to £1,000 and above is a real decision. What you gain is a body and top that suit a player who already knows what sound they want. The guitars here are for people who play often, who want solid wood throughout the top, and who are happy to invest in something that should last. If you are still learning, a cheaper guitar from our acoustic guitars range may be the wiser start, and you can always come back to the Reserve later.
It is also worth considering a decent gig bag and a spare set of strings, since a guitar at this level deserves good care.
