Solid Top Acoustic Guitar Range

A solid top acoustic guitar has a soundboard cut from a single piece of timber rather than layered laminate. Tanglewood offers 77 of them here, from £299 up to £1,999, across more than a dozen series.

Why a Solid Top Matters

The top is the part of the guitar that moves most when you play. Solid wood tends to give more volume, better sustain and a tone that opens up with age. If you are weighing a step up from a laminate guitar, this is one of the most useful upgrades to make.

Spruce, Cedar and Mahogany

A solid spruce top acoustic guitar is the classic all-rounder, clear and punchy for strumming and picking. The Reunion Pro Super Folk models, such as the TRU4CEAW, offer solid spruce at £399. A solid cedar top acoustic guitar is usually warmer and responds well to a light touch. The TRS4CE from Rosewood Smart is solid cedar at £549.

A solid mahogany top acoustic guitar has a dry, woody character that suits blues and fingerstyle. The Winterleaf TW4CEAVB is solid mahogany at £449. Solid engelmann spruce appears on the Premier TP4CE at £599.

Solid Top Electro Acoustic Guitar Choices

Most of this range has pickups fitted, so a solid top electro acoustic guitar is easy to find. The Sundance Historic TW40 D AN E dreadnought is £799. Further up, the Heritage TW1000HSR dreadnought is £1,349 and has no electronics. If you want to compare series, see Winterleaf and Sundance Historic.

Choosing by Budget

  • Around £400 to £450: Reunion Pro and Winterleaf models.
  • £550 to £800: Rosewood Smart, Premier, Sundance Classic and Sundance Historic.
  • £1,000 and above: Sundance Reserve and Heritage.

Shapes Available

Solid tops are not limited to one body type. You can pick Super Folk, dreadnought, orchestra, parlour or the OO Folk shape, as on the Sundance Historic TW40 SO HC E in Heritage Cherry at £799. The Winterleaf TW4TLCEAVB is a thinline Super Folk at £449, a slimmer body that is comfortable to hold for long sessions.

Looking After a Solid Top

Solid wood reacts to changes in temperature and humidity, so keep the guitar in its case or gig bag when not in use. Avoid leaving it near radiators or in a cold car. A little routine care goes a long way.

Small hands may like the Java TJ8E parlour at £649. For other body types, visit our dreadnought and parlour pages. Delivery in the UK is free.
