Tanglewood TWX4CEK Winterleaf Exotic Koa Super Folk Cutaway Electro-Acoustic Guitar

Koa back, sides and veneer on a comfortable super folk

The Tanglewood TWX4CEK is a Winterleaf Exotic electro acoustic guitar finished in autumn burst gloss, with koa all round. It is for players who want a mid-sized cutaway guitar that stands out and sounds clear and warm.

Koa all over

Koa is on the back, the sides and the top veneer. The grain is distinctive, and the autumn burst gloss gives it a rich, warm colour. Under the veneer is a solid mahogany top, which keeps the tone focused. If you like a mahogany acoustic guitar but want more sparkle, the koa helps.

Sound and feel

The result is a clear, balanced voice with a bright edge and a warm centre. It works for fingerstyle and for strumming. The super folk body sits between a small body and a full dreadnought, so it is comfortable to hold and still projects well. The cutaway gives access to the upper frets, and the Eboncore fingerboard is smooth.

Electronics

Tanglewood Premium Plus electronics are fitted, with volume and tone controls and a built-in tuner. That makes it easy to set up for a gig or for home recording.

The super folk shape is a good all-rounder. It is easier to hold than a big dreadnought, so it suits players who sit for long stretches, and it still has enough body to fill a small room. Koa guitars also tend to open up with playing, so the voice can become richer the more the guitar is used.

• Solid mahogany top with koa veneer

For a spruce top with flame maple instead, look at the TWX4CEFM. For a bigger body with the same koa finish, the TWX5CEK is a dreadnought. If the super folk shape suits you, the TWX4CEK is £549.
