Tanglewood Rosewood Smart: solid cedar electro-acoustics
The Tanglewood Rosewood Smart series is a small range of four electro-acoustic guitars, priced from £549 to £569. The shared feature is a solid cedar top. Cedar is known for a warm, soft voice that sounds full even when you play lightly, which makes these guitars a good match for fingerstyle and gentle strumming.
Models in the range
- TRS1E Mini Folk (£549): the smallest body, easy to carry and comfortable to hold.
- TRS4CE Super Folk (£549): a mid-sized shape that suits most players.
- TRS5SE Slope Shoulder Dreadnought (£549): the biggest body, with more projection for strummed chords.
A fourth model takes the top of the range to £569. All of them have onboard electronics, so you can plug in when you need to.
Cedar or spruce?
Many Tanglewood ranges use spruce, which sounds bright and clear. A cedar top is gentler and rounder. If you play quietly at home or like a mellow tone, cedar may be the better choice. If you want a more traditional bright strum, see the Tanglewood Premier series, which uses solid engelmann spruce at £599. All solid-top choices are gathered under solid top acoustic guitars.
How to choose
Pick the body shape first. The mini folk is best for small hands or travel. The super folk is the sensible all-rounder. The slope shoulder dreadnought gives the fullest sound. Then think about extras such as a case: take a look at our guitar gig bags and tuners and capos.
The three models named above all cost £549, so you are choosing on feel rather than price. Try to picture where you will play most. A mini folk lives happily on a sofa or in a camper van, while a dreadnought wants a bit more room and rewards you with extra volume when you play with others. The super folk is the safest choice if you are unsure, because its proportions suit sitting, standing and playing on a stool. Having onboard electronics on every model means you never have to buy a separate pickup later.
