Tanglewood Heritage series: the dreadnought guitar, done properly
The Tanglewood Heritage series is a group of four premium guitars priced from £1,199 to £1,499. Most of the range is built on the dreadnought, the most popular acoustic body shape, and all of them have a solid spruce top. If you are shopping for a dreadnought acoustic guitar to keep for years, this is the series to read about.
What you get in the range
The Tanglewood TW1000HSR Heritage Dreadnought is the acoustic model at £1,349. It has no electronics, which suits players who only want the natural sound of the guitar. The Tanglewood TW1000HSRCE Heritage Dreadnought Cutaway costs £1,499 and adds a cutaway and a pickup, so it works for gigging and for reaching the higher frets.
For something a little different, the Tanglewood TW45HSRE Heritage Super Folk Cutaway is £1,499. Super folk is a slightly more refined body than the dreadnought, and it comes with electronics too.
Why a dreadnought?
The dreadnought is a large-bodied guitar with a powerful voice and plenty of low end. It is the classic choice for strumming, bluegrass, country and singer songwriters. A solid spruce top gives it a bright, clear attack that holds up well in a band. Players looking at a smaller alternative to the dreadnought junior size will find the parlour and orchestra shapes in other series.
Spruce top and what it brings
Spruce is the traditional soundboard wood for steel-string guitars. Used as a solid top, it is stiff yet light, so it moves quickly and gives good volume and clarity. The tone also keeps developing with years of playing. All four Heritage guitars share this feature, so the main differences are the cutaway, the electronics and the body outline.
Choosing your Heritage guitar
- Pure acoustic: pick the TW1000HSR at £1,349.
- Plugging in: the cutaway models at £1,499 have electronics and easier upper fret access.
- Comfort: choose the super folk if the full dreadnought feels large across your body.
If your budget is smaller, the Tanglewood Java series offers spruce-top guitars at £649. For a rival at the very top of the range, compare the Tanglewood Great Britain guitars at £1,999.
