An Acoustic Amplifier from Tanglewood

An acoustic amplifier is built to reproduce the natural sound of a flat top guitar, rather than to colour or distort it. The Tanglewood Amplifiers series has two models, with prices running from £49 to £599, so there is a step for a bedroom player and a step for someone who gigs.

The Tanglewood T6

The Tanglewood T6 is the amplifier shown in the series, at £599. It is the top model in the range and the one to look at if you want more power and a more serious setup for gigs, busking or rehearsals. The second model in the series starts at £49, which makes the range easy to enter on a smaller budget.

Choosing power and size

Think about where you will play. A small amp is fine for a bedroom, a lounge or a quiet practice room. A bigger amp gives you headroom for a band, a pub corner or an open mic night, where the sound has to carry across a room. It is better to buy slightly more than you need than to run a small amp flat out. Try a few settings once it arrives and keep the volume sensible.

Matching an amp to your guitar

Any acoustic guitar amplifier needs a signal to amplify, which means your guitar must have a pickup. That is the job of an electro-acoustic. Browse our Electro-Acoustic Guitars if you do not have one, or look at Acoustic Bass Guitars if you play low. Plain acoustics and ukuleles with no electronics will not work directly with an amp.

You can use these amps with an electric guitar too, though an electric guitar amplifier is normally voiced for gain and effects, so the tone will be different. For electric players, see Electric Guitars and decide which sound you want.

Do not forget the lead

  • A guitar amplifier cable or guitar amplifier cord connects your instrument to the amp.
  • Choose a length that gives you room to move without a tangle on the floor.
  • Keep a spare in your bag.

Our Guitar Cables page has the options, including the Tanglewood Flex cables. For the full range of amps, visit Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers.
