Classical guitars for sale: nylon strings, warm tone

A classical guitar uses nylon strings, a wide neck and a softer, rounder voice than a steel string acoustic. It suits fingerstyle, Spanish style pieces and beginners who want gentler strings under their fingers. Our 17 Tanglewood models run from £89 to £499, all in the Enredo Madera family.

Three series, three levels

Enredo Madera Comienzo is the starting point. The EMC34 3/4 classical guitar and the EMC44 full size are both £89 with spruce tops. There is also a 1/2 size, the EMC1 at £99, and a 4/4 EMC3 at £119.

Enredo Madera Elegante sits in the middle. The EME1 is a 3/4 size at £139, the EME2 is full size at £159, and the EMETLCE is a thinline electro-classical guitar at £199.

Enredo Madera Dominar is the top of the range. The EMD3 and parlour size EMD4 have solid cedar tops at £349, and the EMDC6 has a solid spruce top at £499.

Choosing the right size

  • 1/2 and 3/4 classical guitar: a shorter scale for younger children or smaller hands, and handy for travel.
  • Full size 4/4: the standard choice for teenagers and adults.
  • Parlour: a compact body with a full voice, good for sofa playing.

Electric classical guitar options

If you want to play through an amplifier or a PA, choose an electro classical guitar. The thinline Dominar models such as the EMDC1 and EMDC7 are both £299, while the EMDC8BK with a flame mahogany veneer top is £399. A thinline body reduces feedback when you are playing louder.

Solid top or laminate

Solid cedar and solid spruce tops, found on the Dominar models, open up in tone as they age and give the richest sound. Spruce brings a brighter attack, cedar a warmer response. The lower priced models are a sensible way to start without a big outlay.

Looking after nylon strings

Nylon strings stretch for the first few days, so a new classical guitar will go out of tune more often at first. That is normal and settles quickly. Fit a fresh set when the tone turns dull, and keep the guitar away from radiators and damp. A simple tuner and a padded bag protect your investment and make practice easier.
