Sundance Classic: a compact folk guitar with a solid cedar top
The Tanglewood Sundance Classic series is a short line-up with two models, and each one is a folk guitar at heart. Both have a solid cedar top, both have built-in electronics, and both cost £699. The difference is the body shape, so the choice comes down to how you like to hold and play.
The two models
The Tanglewood TSC8E is a parlour. It is the smaller of the pair, which makes it comfortable on the lap and easy to take from room to room. The Tanglewood TSC4CE is a super folk, a little larger, with more body to push the sound out. If you want a folk acoustic guitar with a fuller voice, the super folk is the one to try first.
Why solid cedar?
Cedar is a softer wood than spruce. It tends to respond to a light touch, so fingerstyle players and gentle strummers often like it. Because the top is solid and not laminate, the guitar can open up as it is played. Both models are electro-acoustics, so you can plug straight into an amplifier or a PA when you want to play a gig or a session.
- Solid cedar top on both models
- Electro-acoustic with onboard electronics
- Parlour or super folk body
- One fixed price of £699
How to choose
Pick the TSC8E if comfort and portability matter most. Pick the TSC4CE if you want a bit more volume and bass from an acoustic guitar. If you are not sure what size suits you, our parlour guitars and folk and orchestra acoustic guitars pages show the shapes side by side.
Who it suits
With only two guitars at one price, there is no budget ladder to climb. That keeps the decision simple. These guitars suit players who want a solid wood top and a pickup without paying for a large jumbo body. A parlour is a good choice for songwriting at home, while the super folk is the better pick if you play with others and need to be heard. Both are a good step up from an entry level laminate guitar, and they will happily serve a player for many years.
It is also worth thinking about how you will use the guitar. If it stays on the sofa, comfort wins. If it travels to rehearsals and small venues, the added projection of the larger shape may matter more.
