The Tanglewood TR5CE takes the big, familiar dreadnought body and adds a cutaway and a pickup. It is a cutaway electro acoustic guitar that suits strummers who also like to play the odd solo high up the neck, and it comes in a plain Natural Satin finish.

Spruce over mahogany

The top is spruce and the back and sides are mahogany. Spruce gives a bright, clear attack and good volume. Mahogany adds warmth underneath. The result is a balanced, open sound that works for hard strumming and for lighter picking.

The cutaway

A dreadnought can be awkward to reach around. The cutaway removes part of the body next to the upper frets, so your fretting hand can get up to the top end of the Eboncore fingerboard without a stretch. If you play lead lines, that matters.

On the bench it makes sense for a player who wants one guitar to do several jobs. You can strum open chords at a campfire, then switch to a solo in the same song without changing instrument. The big body gives a confident low end, and the spruce keeps the top end defined so the sound never turns muddy when you push it harder.

The Roadster range gives you a few routes. Choose the TR5CE if you want the extra reach of a cutaway. If you never go above the twelfth fret, the TR5E is the same guitar without the cutaway at the same £299.
