Tanglewood TWT4 Tiare Spruce Top Mahogany Concert Ukulele, Satin

Spruce on top, mahogany below, and a low price

A classic mix at a modest price, the Tanglewood TWT4 is a concert ukulele built around spruce and mahogany. Spruce goes on the top and mahogany on the back and sides, all in a concert body. At £89 it is one of the easiest ways into the Tiare series.

How the two woods work together

Spruce is quick and bright. It gives the TWT4 clear highs and good note definition when you strum. Mahogany adds body and warmth underneath, so the sound does not feel thin. The back is arched, which helps the notes carry across a room.

Made to be picked up and played

The mahogany neck is smooth and the Eboncore fingerboard is easy to move around. Chrome die-cast tuners help it stay in tune. For a beginner that matters, because a ukulele that holds pitch is more fun to practise on.

Looks

You see the contrast straight away. The pale spruce top sits above the richer brown of the mahogany, under a natural satin finish. A laser-cut Tiare rosette frames the soundhole.

Who it suits

Pick this one if you are learning and want a reliable, no-fuss ukulele. The concert scale gives your fingers more space than a soprano, and the light build means you can play for a long time without tiring. It also works as a spare for lessons, a campsite or the garden, where you do not mind it getting a little use.

• Spruce top for clarity
• Mahogany, arched back and sides for warmth
• Concert body, Tiare series
• Acoustic only, natural satin finish

It costs the same as the TWT3, which swaps in black walnut for a mellower tone. Hear both if you can. If you want more figure in the wood, the flame mahogany TWT6 is £129. Choose the TWT4 if you want a clean, familiar voice and have a limited budget.
