Tanglewood NL6JP Northstar Littlestar Mini Offset Bass Guitar, Thru Purple

A purple short scale bass for a first low end

The Tanglewood NL6JP is a mini bass, not a six string guitar. It has the offset waist of a classic bass shape in a smaller body. If you want a first bass that younger players or beginners can manage, or a light one for travel, this short scale bass guitar fits.

Thru Purple

The finish is a translucent purple gloss. Because it is see through, it gives the body depth and lets you see the poplar beneath. It is the bold choice in the pair, and it looks like a proper instrument.

Shorter reach

The scale length is 760mm. That is shorter than a full size bass, so there is less string tension and a smaller stretch along the neck. Fretting is easier, and a developing bassist can play for longer. The neck is maple with a caramel stain and the fingerboard is Techwood.

Sound

The poplar body gives a balanced base with clear definition. A single coil soap-bar pickup supplies the output, with a solid low end. Chrome die cast machine heads keep it steady.

Why start small

Bass strings are thick, and a full size neck can be a long way to reach for a small player. A compact bass lets you learn the notes and the rhythm without wrestling the instrument. The skills you learn here carry over to a larger bass later.

• Offset body shape
• 760mm short scale
• Single coil soap-bar pickup
• Maple neck with caramel stain

If purple is not your colour, the NL6PBL is the same bass in Thru Blue at the same price. Either one suits a young musician, a first time bassist or a traveller. You will need a bass amp and a lead. Delivery is free in the UK.
