Tanglewood NSP4MC Northstar Pro Offset Electric Guitar, Morello Cherry

A deep red offset with a soap-bar bite

The Tanglewood NSP4MC is an offset electric guitar from the Northstar Pro series, finished in Morello Cherry. At £229 it is the lowest priced way into the range, and it suits players who want an offset shape without a big spend.

Body and neck

The body is poplar, a light wood that keeps the guitar easy to hold through a long practice session. The offset shape sits well on the knee when you are seated and balances nicely on a strap.

The neck is maple with a caramel stain, which gives a smooth feel and a warm contrast against the red body. The fingerboard is Techwood, and the machine heads are chrome die cast.

Pickup and sound

A single coil soap-bar pickup does the work here. Soap-bars have a thick, punchy voice that sits between a classic single coil and a humbucker, so you can push it with overdrive or leave it clean. If you search for a tanglewood northstar pro guitar to plug in and play, this one covers the basics well.

The Morello Cherry finish

The finish is a dark, glossy cherry red. It shows off the contours of the shape and looks good under stage lights or in a bedroom corner.

• Poplar offset body
